Should I do my own smoke & soot clean up?
For most cases of smoke and soot cleanup, especially if the damage is significant, it’s strongly recommended to hire a professional restoration company rather than attempting to clean it yourself; improper cleaning can spread soot further, potentially causing more damage and posing health risks from inhaling soot particles.
What is the difference?
Smoke is a complex combination of gases and tiny hydrocarbon particles produced by a fire that is not burning efficiently. This gaseous mixture primarily consists of water vapor, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide, but it can also contain other substances such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, tar, and even atomized plastic particles. The visibility of smoke is largely due to the presence of larger hydrocarbon particles known as soot, which can appear in shades of grey, black, or white. The specific characteristics of smoke, including its smell, color, and chemical makeup, vary depending on the materials being burned, leading to distinct differences between the smoke produced by burning plastic versus that from burning wood.
Soot refers to the hydrocarbon particles released during a fire that is burning inefficiently. In such cases, small fragments of the material fail to combust completely and instead detach, becoming airborne as soot. These particles can range in size from microscopic dimensions to the size of rice grains. Soot is carried throughout indoor environments by smoke and air currents, settling on various surfaces. It poses a significant concern during cleanup after a house fire, as it is responsible for the black residue and lingering smoky smell that can permeate the area.
